Instead of just taking apart the whole theme in one day, we found that breaking up each descriptor would work better. We want to listen to each other and not just write what we think in a jigsaw manner and never really understand what each other means.
We began with "the nature of the self."
Each child discussed what it meant to them, and what we realized when one student mentioned it is like, Lady Gaga's, "Born this Way." That began with a discussion of other songs that share this theme of being yourself. We decided to bring in these songs to class via CD or flashdrive and listen to what people had to say. Students brought in the following songs:
"Born this Way" by Lady Gaga
"Beautiful" by Christina Aguilera
"Firework" by Katy Perry
"Man in the Mirror" by Michael Jackson
We reflected on how these songs fit the descriptor...and I told the children we would keep these songs on file for later. What we will do with them now is just keep them. Who knows how we will use them later or if we will use them?
